Why Knowing Your Purpose Matters More Than Ever

By Mark Griffin

If you’re not quite sure what your purpose is, you’re not alone. Many high-achieving leaders—especially those who have built, scaled, or led successful businesses—find themselves quietly wondering: What’s all this really for?

Sometimes, the question is subtle. A passing thought after a big milestone. Other times, it’s louder: a persistent discomfort, a lack of fulfillment, or the gnawing feeling that even with success, something is still… missing.

At PurposeFused, we hear this often. And we don’t think it means you’re off track. In fact, that moment of uncertainty might just be the opening—an invitation to step into something more aligned, more energizing, and more meaningful.

The Truth About Purpose

Purpose isn’t a one-time discovery. It’s not a personal mission statement you write in a notebook and never revisit. It’s not only about career or leadership, either.

Purpose is living in alignment with what matters most—knowing that your energy is being channeled into something that matters to you and impacts others. When you’re connected to that, everything shifts: decisions come more clearly, challenges feel more meaningful, and success feels more fulfilling.

But here’s the challenge:
You can be incredibly driven, accomplished, and respected—and still not feel connected to your purpose.

And that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’re broken or lacking. It means the questions you’re asking now are more evolved. When we pause to ask not just what we do, but why we do it, we begin the work of realignment.

You Don’t Know Your Purpose… and Why You Should

When I’m on stage, or facilitating a workshop, I kick off with a little experiment.

I ask the audience:

“Stand up if you believe you have an organic purpose—something meaningful that drives you to make a difference.”
Almost the entire room stands—85% or more.

Then I say:

“Stay standing if you’d be confident articulating that purpose right now—clearly, concisely, and authentically.”
Nearly everyone sits down, with just a handful still standing.

This isn’t a trick.
It’s a mirror.

Most of us feel we have a purpose. But we haven’t put words to it.
And if we can’t articulate it, we can’t align to it.
And if we can’t align to it, we can’t be intentional about how we live it.

That means our leadership, performance, wellbeing, and impact are often left to chance. And we drift—despite our best efforts.

What Happens When Purpose Isn’t Clear

When purpose isn’t fully articulated, people often shift into autopilot. They keep showing up. Keep producing. Keep pushing forward.

But over time, that disconnection shows up in subtle ways:

  • You’re successful, but feel a vague sense of emptiness

  • You’re constantly busy, but not energized

  • Your work checks all the boxes, but no longer gives you goosebumps

It’s that last part—the goosebumps—that’s key.

One of the most honest moments in the PurposeFused journey came during a conversation with a fellow coach. Mark, our founder, was asked a simple question: “What’s your purpose?” At the time, after decades of working in leadership and culture development, he was stunned to realize… he didn’t have a clear answer.

It wasn’t that he lacked passion or ambition—quite the opposite. But despite all the doing, he hadn’t taken time to name the deeper reason why it all mattered.

That was the shift. And that same clarity is now something we help others uncover every day.

Why It Matters

Purpose isn’t just about fulfillment. It’s about sustainability. Leaders who lead with purpose are:

  • More resilient in the face of challenge

  • More focused in their decision-making

  • More trusted by their teams

  • More energized and impactful long-term

Without purpose, it’s easy to lead reactively. But with it, you move from drifting to driving. From performing to leading with meaning.

You Don’t Need a Lightning Bolt

Sometimes people wait for a breakthrough moment. But often, purpose begins not with a lightning bolt—but with a conversation.

We believe your purpose is already within you. You just need space—and the right questions—to bring it to the surface.

At PurposeFused, we help leaders name, align, and live their purpose. Through coaching, workshops, and real conversations, we help you reconnect to what really matters—so you can lead and live with clarity, confidence, and intention.

Goosebumps don’t lie.
You may not know your purpose right now. But when you do—you’ll feel it.
And so will everyone around you.
